100 Employment Law Tips in 140 Characters
Our employment lawyers at Burness LLP were early adopters of social media for business, using LinkedIn successfully since 2009 to distribute our blogs, legal briefings and thought leadership pieces to our target market of HR professionals. I joined up to Defero Law shortly after. Twitter seemed a logical extension of this strategy.
As I became more confident in my use of LinkedIn for business networking, just over a year ago I started noodling around on Twitter. It was clear that little pockets and communities of HR professionals and employment lawyers had also come together on Twitter. It is worth checking out the hashtags #connectingHR and #ukemplaw in particular.
What struck me most about the users of social media n the HR and employment law community is how generous in time, spirit and ideas they are.
For me, the success of social media for business use is about engaging with other users online – and then taking those relationships into the real world to connect. There’s no point in posting a briefing or blog if you’re not prepared to talk about it…or take a bit of criticism!
I decided that a good way to engage further on Twitter was to put out my own tweets on a separate employment law hashtag - #EmploymentLawTip. I set about tweeting numbered employment law tips combining this hashtag with the well-used #ukemplaw. I posted my first tip on 16 June 2011 and hit my 100th tip on 22 May 2012. In that time, the feedback has been excellent. Some tips resonated more than others – some stirred up debate and others were timely reminders for HR professionals and employment lawyers in my network throughout the UK.
