For the last 18 months LinkedIn has been rolling out features like Santa Claus does presents. You might argue that it has been feature overkill. The one that still confuses me is the LinkedIn 'endorsement' feature. LinkedIn clearly knows its market, it knows that first and foremost it's a recruiters playground. Social network for professionals? Nah.
The endorsement function is designed to give LinkedIn members peer reviews: "I worked with so-and-so and they were great" etc. The problem with it is that LinkedIn promotes connecting with people who you don't know, let alone how good they are at what they say they do professionally. People You Might Know might as well be called Random Selection of Faces to Connect With. We all do it, right?
I have 1766 connections. Roughly half I invited, the other half invited me. At best, I reckon I could reliably endorse about 66 of those connections, which I rarely do. This is because the pop up box that invites me to endorse people is rarely populated by people that I even know what they do. So I don't endorse.
But some people do, and boy do they like to do it regularly, maybe in scattergun fashion, maybe to solicit return endorsements from people they have endorsed for something they know nothing about. Fine, harmless enough I suppose, even if it does render the whole thing pointless.
However, I have a man who likes to endorse me on a daily basis. There hasn't been a morning this past three weeks where I have not had an endorsement for something from this man.
Today he has endorsed me for SEO skills, something which I don't even list as a skill in my profile. How he can do this I don't know. Why he would do it puzzles me even further. He also endorsed me for 'Legal Research', something which my former employer (erm, a legal research company) would have a chuckle about. My former employer hasn't endorsed me so why has my stalker?
I'm spooked, to tell the truth. When I hear something rustling in the yard at night, I wonder to myself if it's my endorsement stalker taking notes in readiness to endorse me for 'sleeping' or 'dreaming'. I lie awake at night, dreading the email I'll get in the morning endorsing me for 'Pillow Nuzzling'.
Does anybody else out there have a LinkedIn endorsement stalker? Please tell me I'm not alone. Please!!!
