The question that has been on the lips of most of us over the past 4 years or so is, what effect will ‘Tesco Law’ have upon us? By us – I mean ‘high street firms’.

However, is this the question we should really be asking?

I have noticed quite a few local firms beefing up recently. By beefing up I mean in terms of their social media. Twitter, Linked In, Blogging – all platforms to shout ‘look at me, look at me....’ and hopefully attract attention and accordingly retain and obtain clients.

In raising public awareness, even in their immediate locality – a town, region or county, these firms are taking steps in the right direction.
I will add one caveat - I am not suggesting that a snazzy blog, set of timely tweets or even a fab website is the whole package... but it is a start. It may even be a start that gives that firm the advantage.
As long as the social media broadcast says something cohesive (and positive) about these firms, and the message projected matches the ethos and practice of these firms, then it seems to me that it is these guys.... NOT our friend with the blue, white and red branding that we need to look out for....

Although I do not doubt, not for one second, that Tesco, AA and Saga will (continue) to take a share of the traditional work carried out by Dobbin, Bobbin and Plank LLP .... is it time that we also started looking closer to home for the real competition starting to emerge?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your comment! At the minute, I think there is a bit a sea-change going on in the way in which the public want to buy legal services. Unfortunately this isn't necessarily in line with the way that firms want to provide them. It is for this reason, along with incoming 'Tesco Law' that I agree that it will be interesting to follow the lie of the land (in the profession) in the coming months and year.

Great post Vicki. I think there's much that law firms are waking up to over and beyond social media, such as pricing, website content, management / case-workflow tools, extra benefits for clients (such as tracking cases online), etc etc.... so, in short, I agree! Although it will of course be interesting to see exactly what the "legal landscape" looks like in a year or two years or ten years, i.e post this October.
