More traffic to your website, and Social Media. What do I need to know about Google+?

Try to suspend disbelief for a second, at the idea of somebody else telling you to use Social Media. What’s worse, not any Social Media, but Google+.

Isn’t “G+” a new platform where nobody visits? Perhaps you’ve not really heard of it and are barely getting to grips with LinkedIn.

If you have a website and want it found more regularly, you should be interested in Google+.

The company that directs most traffic around the internet owns a social media platform and uses “social signals” as an important part of it’s strategy to decide if your website is relevant to the potential client.

In English – your website pages are more likely to get found if you’re active in Google+. There are other good things about it too, but that’s a big enough one for me.

Google+

  • Users: More active users than Twitter
  • Messages: You can send messages targeted to those that will want them, simply arrange your “circles” by segment, rather than friends or family.
  • Engagement: So far this hasn’t been it’s strongest point, but there are now increasing amounts of discussion and engagement
  • Automation: Much less automation means you can’t just send stuff out automatically. That’s a pain at times, but it does mean receiving less stuff you don’t want to see.
  • Interface: A nice user interface and the ability to format your messages (bold, or italics) and not limit them to 140 characters.
  • Search: There is a lot of debate in the SEO world about whether Google+ and search results are linked causally or it’s just a correlation, but there does seem to be a generally agreed point. People that post on Google+, specially those that get others to share or “+1” those posts, do better in search.
  • Are you switching to G+?

It’s more than “just” a social media platform. It seems like a wrapper around everything that they do. If that’s not a good enough reason to think it’ll last I don’t know what is.

Am I moving totally over to it, no – there are still too many prospects on the others too; but time will tell.
