In my capacity of company secretary of a new business venture (Barristerlink.com) and part of the steep learning curve that I am currently experiencing, I took myself off to Olympia to investigate the role of an exhibitor and learn from invited speakers aspects of SEO, social media, online newsletters and blogs to name a few of the not so revolutionary tools (outside of the legal profession) and valuable insights into online marketing and judging from the few solicitors I spoke to, an alien world for them also! Information, guidelines, do’s and dont’s’, and pointers were all divulged and reiterated by the speakers who themselves are actively participating in the marketing practices to advance and highlight their own individual businesses and therefore had valuable information to pass on.
Between those that I heard speak Gary Yantin – HighStreetLawyer.com, Kerry Quinn – Quinn Wilson Associates, Chris Wright – 500 Limited and Timothy Roberts, ICOM I have picked up ideas and tools to research for the foreseeable future.
Like all information it needs to be relevant and financially applicable to your business and its very easy to take on board all recommendations and to feel deflated on what you perceive to be the things you are not doing according to the Gurus.
For me personally I have a LinkedIn profile and will be more conscious to update regularly, Twitter is a new venture and learning the etiquette and jargon will take some time and energy to feel natural, I have signed up for a Blogging for Business course and realise now this is of great importance in the world of social media and crosses over into website updates and SEO.
After taking a good look at my website I have noted some improvements can be made the most obvious pointed out being the addition of a contact telephone number on EVERY page and expect to update your website monthly making sure you are promoting services to your audience. Oh! and an investigation into Hootsuite which I understand will assist me as a social media tool – that or a young child! S
o along with building a new company and new clients, answering emails and the telephone, I now need to be blogging, tweeting, linking in, getting people to like me (facebook), producing newsletters, analysing analytics, and more importantly doing it regularly! Mmmmm off now in search of a high intake of caffeine, multi vitamins and a young child who wants to earn some sweetie money to take care of my social media.
